IMPD Officer Peter P. Fekkes Arrested for OWI in Hendricks County

HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. — An officer from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, identified as Peter P. Fekkes II, faced arrest in Hendricks County following a traffic stop.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed on Friday, the incident involving Peter P. Fekkes unfolded around 11:04 p.m. on Thursday. A Hendricks County Sheriff’s deputy initiated a traffic stop after observing Fekkes driving a 2021 Ford Mustang near Raceway Road and US Highway 36. The report detailed that Fekkes’ vehicle crossed the center line, prompting the deputy to pull him over at the intersection of Raceway and Broken Arrow Roads.

Upon approaching Peter P. Fekkes, the deputy noted that Fekkes claimed he was eating Taco Bell, attributing this to the reason for crossing the center line. Court records further indicate that when asked for his driver’s license and registration, Fekkes exhibited “poor manual dexterity” and “fumbled” while retrieving his documents. During this exchange, Fekkes also mentioned that his license had expired on July 1.

The affidavit reveals that law enforcement officers observed several signs of impairment in Peter P. Fekkes. These included slurred speech and bloodshot, glossy eyes. When questioned about alcohol consumption, Fekkes denied having drunk any alcohol.

Deputies requested Peter P. Fekkes to undergo field sobriety tests, which he declined. He also refused to take a portable breath test at the scene. During the interaction, Fekkes admitted to being a “law enforcement officer in the process of separating from IMPD,” stating this as his reason for refusing the sobriety tests, according to court documents.

As the situation progressed, a deputy detected the odor of alcohol on Fekkes’ breath. Consequently, Peter P. Fekkes was handcuffed, searched, and transported to the Hendricks County Jail.

At the jail, Peter P. Fekkes underwent a certified chemical test, the results of which showed a blood alcohol content of 0.249g/210L. Due to this high level of intoxication, Fekkes was then taken to Hendricks Regional Health for medical clearance before being returned to the Hendricks County Jail.

A subsequent search of Peter P. Fekkes’ vehicle led to the discovery of an open, half-empty container of Svedka Vodka in a black bag on the car floor, as per court records.

According to Indiana’s public court reporting system, Peter P. Fekkes is now facing four charges:

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated and endangering a person — Misdemeanor
  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction in the last seven years — Level 6 Felony
  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated with an alcohol concentration equivalent to .15 or more — Misdemeanor
  • Operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration of .15 or more with a prior conviction — Level 6 Felony

Further reports indicate that this is not the first incident involving Peter P. Fekkes and drunk driving. In 2022, Fekkes was cited for drunk driving following a crash in Ohio. Ohio State Highway Patrol at that time found an open alcohol container in the 2020 Jeep station wagon he was driving when the crash occurred. Similar to the recent incident, Fekkes refused field sobriety tests in 2022. Reports from two years prior identified him as a 21-year veteran of IMPD and a sergeant at the time of the Ohio incident.

In response to these events, IMPD issued a statement to FOX59 and CBS4, noting that Chief Chris Bailey had suspended Peter P. Fekkes without pay on April 10. This suspension, and a recommendation for termination to the civilian merit board, stemmed from the 2022 drunk driving incident in Ohio. IMPD clarified that at the time of his Hendricks County arrest, Peter P. Fekkes was without police authority or powers due to this suspension and pending termination.

IMPD’s statement concluded by emphasizing that, like any individual facing arrest, Peter P. Fekkes is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
