Purina Pioneers Recyclable Packaging, Leading a Sustainable Revolution in the World of Wet Pets

Purina is making waves in the World Of Wet Pets by introducing a groundbreaking innovation in pet food packaging. As a leader in pet care and nutrition, Purina is proud to announce the launch of the first mono-material retort pouch in the pet food industry. This pioneering step not only enhances product quality but also significantly contributes to environmental sustainability. This innovative pouch marks a significant leap forward in creating recyclable solutions for wet pet food, addressing a critical need within the world of wet pets and beyond.

Traditional multi-layer packaging for wet pet food, while effective in preserving freshness and quality, has historically been challenging to recycle. Recognizing this environmental hurdle, Purina has developed a revolutionary pouch made from a single material: Polypropylene (PP). This mono-material structure simplifies the recycling process, making it compatible with existing plastic recycling streams. Importantly, this innovative pouch is robust enough to withstand the high-heat sterilization process required for wet pet food, ensuring the same high standards of product quality and safety that pet owners expect from Purina in the world of wet pets.

The new packaging innovation is being piloted under the Felix brand in the Netherlands, starting this month and continuing for a year. The Netherlands was chosen as the initial launch market due to its established and efficient plastic recycling infrastructure, making it an ideal location to assess consumer response and the pouch’s recyclability in a real-world scenario. This pilot program with Albert Heijn, a major retailer in the Netherlands, will be instrumental in gathering data and feedback for future broader implementation. The product will be available in fully recyclable cardboard boxes, further emphasizing Purina’s commitment to sustainable packaging throughout the entire product lifecycle, from the world of wet pets food production to consumer disposal.

Bernard Meunier, CEO of Nestlé Purina Petcare EMENA, emphasizes the company’s dedication: “We want to contribute to creating a world where pets and people can thrive, and initiatives like this support our goal of offering food that is good for pets, and the planet. This latest innovation on Felix pouch is a significant step forward in our drive to deliver recyclable or reusable packaging on all of our products by 2025.” This statement underscores Purina’s broader vision for a more sustainable future in the world of wet pets.

Beyond this mono-material pouch, Purina is actively exploring a range of other sustainable packaging solutions. These initiatives include investigating paper-based alternatives and piloting reusable packaging systems for dry pet food, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to minimizing environmental impact across its product portfolio in the world of wet pets. Purina’s commitment extends to making all of its packaging reusable or recyclable by 2025, a pledge that positions them as a frontrunner in environmental responsibility within the pet food industry and the wider world of wet pets.
