Peter’s Chinese Cafe in Denver: A Legacy Continues Under Employee Ownership

After four decades of serving the Congress Park neighborhood in Denver, Peter Chan, the founder of the beloved Peter’s Chinese Cafe, is retiring, marking the end of an era but also the beginning of an exciting new chapter for this local institution. Since 1985, Peter’s Chinese Cafe has been a culinary cornerstone at 2609 E. 12th Ave., offering a taste of authentic Chinese cuisine that has resonated with generations of Denver diners. Now, at 70 years old, Chan is stepping back from the daily grind to embark on a well-deserved journey of travel and exploration across southeast Asia.

However, the story of Peter’s Chinese Cafe is far from over. In a heartwarming move that speaks volumes about his character and commitment to his team, Peter Chan has transferred majority ownership of the restaurant to seven of his dedicated employees. This transition ensures that the spirit and flavors of Peter’s Chinese Cafe will not only endure but flourish under the stewardship of those who have been instrumental in its success. These new owners are not just employees; they are family, with many having devoted over a decade of their lives to the restaurant, some even contributing their culinary skills in the kitchen for nearly 30 years. As Chan himself stated, “They worked too hard for me, and I always feel I owe them a lot,” highlighting the deep appreciation and respect he holds for his team.

Customers and fans of Peter’s Chinese Cafe will be relieved to hear that the restaurant’s cherished name will remain unchanged. Moreover, according to long-time manager Luis Angeles, the menu that has captured the hearts (and stomachs) of Denver residents, featuring signature dishes like the irresistible scallion pancakes and savory sesame chicken, will also largely stay the same. Angeles, who has a personal history with Chan spanning 30 years, having first met him as a child, is among the employees who have taken on ownership. For Angeles, who has been working at Peter’s for over 15 years, the decision to become a part owner was a natural one, driven by a desire to honor Chan’s legacy and “gave him his freedom back.”

Peter Chan’s influence extends beyond just delicious food. Over the years, he has imparted valuable life lessons to his employees, including Angeles, teaching them the importance of saving and financial responsibility. While he admits to being a demanding presence in the kitchen, his dedication and mentorship have clearly fostered a strong and loyal team. Although stepping away from the daily operations, Chan plans to remain connected to Peter’s Chinese Cafe, intending to visit and offer his support to ensure its continued success. “I still worry about this business because I want them to succeed,” he expressed, showcasing his enduring care for the restaurant and its future.

Peter’s Chinese Cafe stands as a testament to hard work, community, and the enduring appeal of classic Chinese cuisine. As it transitions into employee ownership, Denver can look forward to the continued legacy of Peter’s Chinese Cafe, a place where delicious food and a strong sense of family come together.
