Peter Townsend Hills: A Life of Service, Family, and Colorado Spirit

Peter Townsend Hills, born on June 18, 1938, in Redlands, California, lived a life marked by dedication to family, a successful career in logistics, and a deep passion for his hobbies. As the son of a military man, Peter Townsend experienced life across the United States, shaping him into a resilient and adaptable individual. His journey, which began in California, took him through Maryland, North Carolina, and finally to Colorado, where he truly found his home and community.

Early Life and Passions of Peter Townsend

Growing up in a military family meant frequent moves for Peter Townsend Hills. His father, Col. J Townsend Hills, served in the Air Force during World War II, instilling in Peter a sense of discipline and service. Despite the transient nature of military life, Peter found a constant passion in amateur radio during his high school years at Bethesda Chevy Chase in Maryland. This early interest in radio communication became a lifelong hobby, reflecting his inquisitive mind and love for connecting with others. Following high school, Peter Townsend pursued higher education at the University of Maryland, laying the foundation for his future career.

Career in Engineering and Logistics

Peter Townsend’s professional life began with a move to Colorado in 1960, where he joined Martin Marietta. He dedicated five years to the company before returning to the East Coast in 1965. After a period in North Carolina and Washington D.C., where he focused on family care, the allure of Colorado drew him back in 1971. Inspired by John Denver’s iconic song “Rocky Mountain High,” Peter Townsend returned to stay, making Colorado his home for the next 47 years. This move marked a turning point, both personally and professionally. He transitioned into entrepreneurship, establishing his own headhunting firm, Chrysler Consultants. Later in his career, Peter Townsend Hills leveraged his self-taught skills and experience to become a logistics engineer at Lockheed Martin, where he retired in 2001. His career path showcased his adaptability and determination to succeed in diverse roles.

Family Life and Colorado Home

In Colorado, Peter Townsend Hills found more than just professional fulfillment; he found love and built a family. He met Lelda (Teddy) Dickey in a serendipitous setting – singing in the Saint Thomas choir. Their shared love for music and community blossomed into marriage in 1973. Peter Townsend was a devoted family man, cherishing his wife of 44 years, Lelda, and his children, Scott Townsend Hills and Julia (Jill) Hills McKenzie. His joy extended to his five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Beyond his professional and family life, Peter Townsend embraced a variety of hobbies. He was an avid hunter and camper, enjoyed friendly competition during bridge nights, and remained deeply involved in amateur radio. He also loved grilling and was known for his meticulous organizational skills, famously adhering to the motto: “A place for everything, everything in its place.”

A Legacy of Strength and Resilience

Peter Townsend Hills is remembered as a selfless man who faced life’s challenges with remarkable strength and determination. His personal philosophy, “It is not how you fall, but how you get back up!”, serves as an inspiration to those who knew him. He taught by example the importance of resilience and a positive outlook in the face of adversity. Peter Townsend Hills’ legacy is one of dedication to family, a strong work ethic, and a life lived with passion and purpose in the heart of the Colorado Rockies.

He is survived by his wife, Lelda (Teddy) Dickey Hills, his children, Scott Townsend Hills and Julia (Jill) Hills McKenzie, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his sister, Susan (Hills) Coursey. He was predeceased by his sisters, Ellen Klos and Edith (Dee Dee) Sargent (Hills) Woods.

The family expresses their gratitude for the compassionate care provided by Denver Hospice and St. Thomas Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Peter Townsend Hills are requested to be made to the March of Dimes and St. Thomas Episcopal Church, continuing his spirit of generosity and community support.
