It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Peter Blum, a cherished friend and instrumental figure in the history of the YMCA of Boca Raton. Peter Blum, who peacefully passed away on Monday, January 23, 2023, was more than just a supporter; he was a cornerstone of our YMCA family. His journey with the YMCA began in his childhood in Peoria, Illinois, where the YMCA served as a second home, shaping his values and community spirit.

In 1969, Peter Blum, driven by a vision to bring the positive impact of the YMCA to Boca Raton, joined forces with other community leaders. This dedicated group embarked on a mission to establish a YMCA in the area. Their perseverance and unwavering commitment culminated in the official incorporation of the YMCA of Boca Raton in 1972. Peter Blum’s early leadership was crucial in turning this ambitious dream into a tangible reality for countless families in the region.

Peter’s connection to the YMCA of Boca Raton remained strong and deeply personal throughout his life. For decades, he was a familiar and welcome face at the YMCA Preschool, where he lovingly read stories to the children, embodying the YMCA’s commitment to youth development. His words, “We just welcome everybody (at the Y). It’s a safe place, it’s affordable, it’s a family center. It’s more than I ever thought,” perfectly encapsulate his belief in the YMCA’s inclusive and community-focused mission. Peter Blum’s involvement spanned over half a century, and his dedication was pivotal in attracting significant donors and advocates, including philanthropists like Richard and Helen DeVos, Eugene and Christine Lynn, and William B. Ziff, Jr., further solidifying the YMCA’s foundation.

The YMCA of South Palm Beach County will soon honor Peter Blum’s remarkable legacy through special gatherings and events. His contributions as a founding member, the 4th Board Chair in 1978, and his leadership in capital campaigns for both YMCA campuses are indelible. As a member of the Heritage Club, Peter Blum represented the highest ideals of service and commitment to the YMCA. In recognition of his extraordinary dedication, the YMCA’s most prestigious accolade, the Peter Blum Legacy Award, stands as a testament to his enduring impact, awarded annually to those who exemplify outstanding service to the YMCA of South Palm Beach County.

Peter Blum’s warm laughter, gentle nature, and profound dedication to supporting children and families through “his” YMCA will be profoundly missed.

A Celebration of Life in honor of Peter Blum will be hosted by his wife, Mary, and family at St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church, located at 643 NE Fourth Avenue, Boynton Beach, FL 33435, on Monday, February 6, 2023, at 1:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, Peter’s family suggests memorial donations be made to The Y (YMCA), at 6631 Palmetto Circle South, Boca Raton, FL 33433, or to the Bethesda Hospital Foundation, at 2815 South Seacrest Boulevard, Boynton Beach, FL 33435, reflecting Peter’s lifelong commitment to both the YMCA and the wider community.
