DIY Outdoor Pet Fence: The Ultimate Guide to a Safe Yard for Your Dog

Do you need a reliable fence to keep your dog from wandering off into the neighbor’s yard or escaping altogether? Imagine creating a secure outdoor space of any size, tailored to your needs. Whether you want to limit your dog’s access to certain areas of your yard, protect your pool, or safeguard your prized vegetable garden, a Freestanding Dog Fence offers the perfect solution to keep those areas pet-free.

The Dog Proofer DIY Freestanding Dog Fence System is designed for ultimate versatility. It provides a safe, strong, and virtually invisible dog-proof barrier that adapts to your evolving needs. This fencing system is not only a dependable permanent fence solution for the entirety of your dog’s life, but it also serves as an excellent temporary dog fence for renters. Remarkably, this fence can even be disassembled and relocated to your new home when you move!

Fencing That’s Built to Last Outdoors

Durability is key when it comes to outdoor pet fences, and this system is engineered to withstand the elements. All metal components are constructed from galvanized steel, ensuring time-tested, long-lasting performance in outdoor environments. For enhanced resistance against daily wear and tear, the posts are further protected with a black powder coating. The 6′ and 7′ tall versions are built to contain even the most determined dogs, utilizing heavy-duty 1 5/8” diameter posts. For smaller to medium breeds, the 4.5’ tall version uses user-friendly standard 1 3/8” diameter steel posts, making installation easier without compromising strength.

Durable Steel Wire Mesh for Maximum Security

Specifically designed with pets in mind, the welded wire mesh fencing material offers exceptional rigidity and durability, standing strong against impacts. With an impressive breaking strength of over 1000 lbs, the DIY Freestanding Dog Fence System provides a truly secure barrier suitable for dogs of all sizes, from the smallest terrier to the largest breed.

The square openings of the mesh measure 1.7” x 1.7”, carefully sized to provide the least obstructed view possible while ensuring your dog cannot scratch, chew through, or squeeze through the fence. This heavy-duty welded wire mesh is crafted from galvanized steel wire and finished with a black vinyl coating. This coating not only adds to the fence’s longevity but also allows it to virtually disappear into the landscape, maintaining the aesthetic appeal of your yard. For technical detail, each wire strand in the welded wire mesh has a diameter of approximately 2.2-2.4mm, highlighting its robust construction.

Dig-Proof Barrier: No More Underground Escapes

Worried about your dog’s digging habits? Escape attempts under fences are a common concern for dog owners, but this DIY Outdoor Pet Fence system has a solution built right in.

A welded wire bottom barrier is included with every DIY Freestanding Dog Fence kit. This essential component creates a physical barrier directly on the ground leading up to your fence line, effectively preventing dogs from digging underneath and escaping. The wire mesh dig-proof barrier is easily secured to the ground using the included galvanized ground stakes. Cleverly designed, the openings in the mesh allow grass to grow naturally through the barrier, making it practically invisible after installation and blending seamlessly with your lawn.

Combine Fencing Solutions for Complete Yard Security

The Dog Proofer fence extension solutions offer remarkable versatility, allowing them to integrate with and enhance existing fencing or walls of virtually any type. This is particularly useful for dog owners dealing with dogs that are prone to jumping or climbing over traditional fences. These extensions can also be seamlessly combined with the Freestanding DIY Dog Fence to secure areas of your yard that are currently unfenced. By strategically combining Dog Proofer systems, you can create a comprehensive and safe outdoor space for your dog, providing you with unparalleled peace of mind. DIY Installation: Set It Up Yourself

Installation is designed to be straightforward and manageable for the average homeowner with the unique ground-driven galvanized steel sleeves. Say goodbye to the strenuous task of digging post holes – this system eliminates the need for back-breaking digging and the hassle of concrete. The Dog Proofer DIY Freestanding Dog Fence is specifically designed for DIY installation, meaning no specialized tools or professional installers are required.

Generally, anyone who considers themselves reasonably handy can complete the installation process, though this can depend on the specific site conditions. If you prefer not to handle the installation yourself, a local handyman can easily manage the task. Most fences can be fully installed and ready for use in a single weekend, or even less, allowing your dog to enjoy their new secure outdoor space almost immediately!

Kit Comparison: Choosing the Right Outdoor Pet Fence for Your Needs

Choosing the right kit size is essential for ensuring you have all the components needed for your outdoor pet fence project.

Heavy-Duty Access Gates for Added Convenience

If you require access through your Freestanding Dog Fence, incorporating a gate into your layout is a practical solution. Gates are offered in versions specifically designed to match the height of the fencing you select, ensuring seamless integration and consistent security. It is crucial to select a gate that corresponds to the height and version of your chosen dog fence system. For example, a 4.5 ft height gate is not compatible with a 6 ft height dog fence system.

The heavy-duty gates are available in heights to match each freestanding dog fence version:

  • 4.5ft Height Gate (designed for the 4.5ft tall Freestanding Dog Fence System)
  • 6ft Height Gate (designed for the 6ft tall Freestanding Dog Fence System)
  • 6ft Height Gate – Escape Proof Top (designed for the 7ft Tall w/ Escape Proof Top)

Each gate version is offered in widths of 36″ or 60″, providing options to suit different access needs.

Important Considerations for Chewers

If your pet has a history of aggressive chewing or destructive behavior towards durable materials, it is strongly recommended to contact our planning experts before placing your order. This will allow us to discuss specific considerations and ensure your dog’s safety and your satisfaction remain the top priorities.

Kit sizes are provided in linear feet of fencing. For example, a 100-foot kit contains all the necessary materials and components to construct up to 100 linear feet of Freestanding Fence, assuming standard conditions and no unusual obstacles requiring extra components.

To illustrate kit sizing, a 100-foot kit configured into a square would create an enclosure approximately 24′ x 24′ (576 square feet). However, many customers utilize the back of their house as one “side” of the enclosure. This approach allows a kit to create a larger overall area and provides easier access for pets. For instance, using a 100-foot kit against the back of a house could create a rectangular enclosure of 27′ x 45′ (extending 27′ from the house, spanning 45′, and returning 27′ to the house), resulting in a spacious 1,215 square feet. A 200-ft kit used in a similar fashion could yield an even larger enclosure of approximately 63′ x 63′ (63′ out from the house, spanning 63′, and back 63′), totaling an expansive 3,969 square feet.

Each purchase of a Freestanding Dog Fence System includes a Zip Tie Puller/Cutter tool for added convenience during installation.

If you are unsure about the most suitable kit size or the number of components needed for your specific project, it is highly recommended to reach out to our expert planning team for personalized assistance!

Please refer to “Kit Sizing” to understand the number of posts included in each kit.

For layouts with numerous turns or specific side lengths, you might need to purchase additional posts beyond what is included in the standard kits. To calculate the total posts required for your unique layout, follow these guidelines:

  1. A post is needed at every endpoint and corner or turn in the fence line.
  2. A post is required at each point where there is a significant change in ground level (up or down).
  3. Measure the distance between posts that are needed at specific locations (as determined in steps 1 & 2). Divide this distance by 9′ (the maximum recommended post spacing) to determine if additional posts are needed in between these points.

Extra posts are available for individual purchase to accommodate more complex layouts or if you need to add to your kit.

For easier handling and shipping, the wire mesh in each kit is divided into two sections: an upper and a lower portion, which are designed to overlap in the middle. This overlap provides additional strength to the fence. During installation, the overlapping sections are permanently secured together to create a seamless and robust barrier.

The welded wire mesh is attached to the posts using black, UV-stable 120lb test Heavy Duty Zip Ties, ensuring a secure and weather-resistant connection.

Please note that fasteners for attaching the fence hardware to buildings or structures are not included in the kit. You should select fasteners that are appropriate for the material of your building or structure (e.g., wood screws, masonry screws).

Tools Needed for Installation

Included Tools: These tools are included with your purchase to assist with installation:

  • Zip Tie Puller/Cutter: For tightening and trimming zip ties efficiently.
  • 1-⅜” Hex Head Driver Bit: Compatible with standard power drills for easy screw driving.
  • Hex Wrench (Included with 7 FT Tall w/ Escape-Proof Top Version): For use with the set screws in the escape-proof top extensions.

Required Tools (Not Included): These tools are necessary to install the product effectively:

  • Power Drill: Essential for driving self-tapping screws.
  • Tin Snips/Aviation Snips, Metal Shears, or Wire Cutters: For cutting and customizing the wire mesh as needed.
  • Sledge Hammer: For driving ground sleeves into the ground.

Optional Tools (Sold Separately): These tools can significantly speed up and simplify the installation process:

  • String and Stakes: Useful for marking out the desired fence enclosure and ensuring straight lines.
