For over twenty-six years, Karl Kullberg has been the watchful eye over Mt Peter, a family-owned ski resort nestled in New York’s Hudson Valley. As he surveys the landscape, his deep knowledge of every contour and feature of the mountain is evident. Speaking with Karl, one quickly senses the rich history and almost nostalgic Americana that permeates Mt Peter. It’s akin to hearing a rancher recount the story behind every fence post and building on their land.
Despite the challenges of recent seasons and its location in the southerly reaches of New York, Karl remains optimistic and grounded about the future of this beloved resort.
“Mt Peter is truly a family mountain, and it’s home,” Karl explains. “My wife’s parents live right above the lodge. Every morning, coffee in hand, a walk around the mountain reveals what needs attention. During the season, I’m here around the clock. If anything arises, I’m on-site to handle it immediately.”
Mt Peter’s identity is firmly rooted in being a “learn-to-ski” destination. “Our programs are incredibly successful, with 250 kids just in our race program,” Karl notes proudly. “To maintain that success, we focus on the essentials: making excellent snow, meticulous grooming, and ensuring our lifts run flawlessly for our skiers.”
Located just 50 miles from the bustling metropolis of NYC, Mt Peter boasts a unique and storied past. “Macy’s Department Store actually established this ski area,” Karl recounts, delving into its history. “Back then, it was simpler, just a couple of rope tows. But it became a hub for clothing suppliers to showcase winter fashions, network, and enjoy cigars and whiskey. Legend even says Babe Ruth learned to ski right here on Mt Peter.”
The resort’s ownership evolved over time. “Investors from Camelback Resort eventually acquired it from Macy’s,” Karl continues, “and then Don and Gail Sampson purchased it from Camelback. Remarkably, the Sampsons bought it with no money down, using their house as collateral. Last year, we proudly celebrated our 80th anniversary.”
Karl’s own history is deeply intertwined with skiing. “I grew up in New York and was a ski racer in my younger years,” he shares. “I attended the ski academy at Pat’s Peak and later Squaw Valley, back in the era of long, slender skis.” Returning to New York, Karl’s path led him back to the slopes. “I started coaching at Mt Peter and eventually married Rebecca Sampson, the owner’s daughter. I managed the race department, and after nine years, I became the mountain manager. I’ve gone from literally drilling holes for racecourses to being radioed for lift assistance.”
The passion for skiing runs deep in the Kullberg family. “My wife Rebecca, our daughter Brianna, and son Kei are all avid skiers,” Karl beams. “Kei is even a Junior GS National Champion.”
The reach of Mt Peter extends far beyond the Hudson Valley. “I’ve worn my Mt Peter hat all over the globe,” Karl concludes, “and it’s amazing how often people approach me, sharing their stories of learning to ski here. It’s a testament to the lasting impact of this little family mountain.”
