For dogs, our low cost pet vax services include:

  • Bordetella: Often called “kennel cough,” this vaccination protects against a highly contagious respiratory infection, especially important for social dogs.
  • DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza): A combination vaccine protecting against several serious and potentially deadly viral diseases.
  • Leptospirosis: A bacterial disease transmitted through contaminated water and urine, can cause kidney and liver damage and is zoonotic (transmissible to humans).

For cats, our low cost pet vax options cover:

  • FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia): A core combination vaccine protecting against common and highly contagious feline respiratory viruses and feline distemper.

Heartworm Prevention: Protecting Your Pet from a Silent Threat

Heartworm disease poses a significant threat to both dogs and cats, particularly in regions like Texas with a high mosquito population. The good news is that heartworm is easily and affordably preventable, while treatment is complex, expensive, and not always successful, especially in cats. At our clinics throughout DFW, we provide heartworm testing for dogs and preventative medications for both dogs and cats, as part of our commitment to low cost pet vax and comprehensive care.

We also offer affordable heartworm treatment at our full-service clinic in Irving, TX, for pets diagnosed with this disease.

Heartworms are parasites transmitted by infected mosquitoes. Alarmingly, research indicates up to 80% of mosquitoes may carry heartworms, and a single bite from an infected mosquito can transmit the disease. Mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk, making these peak exposure times for your pets.

  • Shockingly, 1 in 20 dogs tested at our DFW low cost pet vax clinics are diagnosed with heartworms.
  • Even indoor cats are at risk, with 1 in 4 cats with heartworm disease being strictly indoor pets.
  • Heartworm treatment for dogs can exceed $1,000, and treatment for cats is not currently available.
  • Texas is unfortunately among the top 5 states with the highest incidence of heartworm disease.

The Deadly Nature of Heartworm Disease

Heartworm disease is prevalent across the nation, but especially rampant in Texas due to our abundant mosquito population. While early stages of heartworm infection may show no outward signs, the disease is often fatal for dogs if left untreated. Heartworms cause severe and lasting damage to the heart, arteries, and lungs, ultimately leading to congestive heart failure in most cases.

Therefore, we strongly advise annual heartworm testing for dogs and consistent monthly heartworm prevention medication throughout their lives. We offer various heartworm prevention options at our low cost pet vax clinics, including convenient injectable preventatives that provide six months of protection. Our team can help you determine the best heartworm prevention strategy for your pet’s lifestyle and needs.

Deworming: Protecting Your Pet from Intestinal Parasites

Puppies and kittens are particularly susceptible to intestinal parasites, primarily roundworms and hookworms. These parasites can be transmitted from their mothers and can hinder growth and overall health.

Roundworms

Roundworms are most problematic in young puppies and kittens. They deprive young animals of essential nutrients, potentially leading to stunted growth and failure to thrive. Symptoms can range from mild gastrointestinal upset to severe issues like vomiting, diarrhea, and even respiratory problems.

Roundworm eggs are shed in the feces of infected animals, and other dogs can become infected by ingesting these eggs from contaminated environments. Roundworms can also lie dormant in adult dogs and reactivate during pregnancy, infecting puppies in utero or through their mother’s milk.

Roundworms also pose a risk to humans, especially in unsanitary conditions or areas frequented by pets, such as children’s sandboxes. Humans can become infected by ingesting roundworm eggs from contaminated hands, soil, or objects. Larval migration through human tissues can cause illness, particularly in children, with symptoms including fever, hepatitis, loss of appetite, weight loss, and persistent cough. In severe cases, roundworm migration to the eyes can even cause blindness in children.

Hookworms

Hookworms share similarities with roundworms but cause disease by attaching to the intestinal lining and feeding on the host’s blood. This blood loss can lead to gastrointestinal distress and, more seriously, life-threatening anemia in puppies and kittens. Hookworm larvae can be transmitted to puppies in utero, through mother’s milk, and even by penetrating the skin. Hookworms can also cause a severely itchy skin condition in humans.

Almost all puppies are born with roundworms or hookworms. Fortunately, these intestinal worms are easily treated with a simple, painless oral dewormer medication, which we offer as part of our standard puppy packages at our low cost pet vax clinics.

Tapeworm Treatment

Tapeworms are less common than roundworms and hookworms. Dogs typically contract tapeworms by ingesting infected fleas, which serve as intermediate hosts for tapeworm eggs. Once ingested, the tapeworm matures in the dog’s intestine, completing its life cycle.

While tapeworms are often considered unpleasant, they are generally not very harmful to dogs. At worst, they may cause mild irritation around your dog’s rear end. Diagnosis is straightforward, as tapeworm segments, resembling small grains of rice, can be observed in the dog’s feces.

Tapeworms can be more concerning in puppies. If you suspect your puppy has tapeworms, we offer a simple and effective one-time tapeworm injection at our low cost pet vax events.

Microchipping: A Permanent ID for Your Pet’s Safety

A microchip is a small, permanent electronic device implanted under your pet’s skin. It provides a unique identification number that can be scanned by animal shelters, veterinary clinics, and animal control facilities. This technology allows for quick and reliable identification of lost pets and reunification with their owners. The microchip implantation process is similar to a routine vaccination, using a slightly larger hypodermic needle.

Microchips are a permanent form of identification, unlike collars and tags that can be lost or removed. We strongly recommend microchipping for all dogs and outdoor cats, especially those prone to wandering.

When scanned, the microchip reveals your contact information, significantly increasing the chances of a safe return if your pet is ever lost or strays. Microchipping is a crucial part of responsible pet ownership and is available at our low cost pet vax clinics.

We also provide flea and tick prevention products!

Services Not Offered at Mobile Clinics

Due to the mobile nature of our clinics, we do not currently offer low cost spay and neuter services at our mobile locations. These surgeries require more extensive facilities and equipment than we can provide on-site.

However, if you are seeking affordable spay and neuter services in the Irving, TX area, we encourage you to visit our full-service Irving Low Cost Pet Vet clinic! Located at 3202 W Irving Blvd, Irving, TX 75061, Low Cost Pet Vet offers low cost spays and neuters, as well as affordable dental cleanings, and a wide range of other veterinary services.
