He received his education at local schools including Melba, Rose Farm, and MCI for his high school years. Early on, Peter realized that farming was not his calling. He ventured to Winnipeg, embarking on a journey of self-discovery and professional growth. As he often recounted, his father’s method of dropping him off at the YMCA in Winnipeg with minimal financial support was a catalyst for his quick entry into the workforce. This experience instilled in him a sense of resourcefulness and determination.
His initial career path led him through various sales positions, which eventually brought him to Saskatoon. This move proved significant as it was in Saskatoon that Peter met and married Ruby in 1971. A significant shift in his professional life occurred when he transitioned into business ownership. Peter’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to own a garden and pet shop in Saskatoon, tapping into his interests and the local community’s needs. Later, he expanded his business ventures by acquiring a Chrysler dealership in Rosthern, Saskatchewan. These business experiences provided him with valuable skills and insights, yet a deeper calling was beginning to emerge.
Transition to Ministry and Theological Studies
Amidst his business successes, Peter increasingly felt a strong spiritual pull towards ministry. This calling became so compelling that he made the pivotal decision to close his businesses and dedicate himself to theological studies. He enrolled at Winnipeg Bible College, marking the beginning of his formal journey into ministry. In 1980, Peter and Ruby welcomed their son, Marshall. Notably, Marshall accompanied them on a significant journey to California within his first month of life, as Peter pursued a Master of Arts degree at Talbot Theological Seminary. This period of theological education equipped him for his future roles in pastoral leadership.
Pastoral Roles and Ministry Service
Upon completing his theological studies, Peter Bergman embarked on a dedicated career in ministry. He served as pastor in three different churches, each contributing to his extensive experience and impact: Kindersley Alliance Church, Lawson Heights Alliance Church in Saskatoon, and Rockyview Alliance Church in Calgary. His pastoral roles allowed him to connect with diverse congregations, provide spiritual guidance, and foster community engagement. Following his pastoral roles, Peter extended his ministry into Planned Giving for the Christian & Missionary Alliance. Even after retirement and his move back to Winnipeg in 2011, Peter continued his service by working in Planned Giving for the Salvation Army, demonstrating his enduring commitment to ministry and charitable work.

Peter was known for his warm, approachable demeanor that made people feel comfortable and at ease. He had a natural ability to connect with others, offering encouragement and positivity in his ministry and personal interactions. His enjoyment of life was evident, and his relationship with his Savior was the cornerstone of everything he did. This deep faith informed his actions and guided his interactions with those around him.
Facing Health Challenges with Steadfast Faith
In his later years, Peter faced significant health challenges, including cancer that necessitated the removal of a kidney. Years later, he was diagnosed with another form of cancer, which ultimately led to his passing. Throughout these health battles, Peter’s faith remained unwavering. He maintained a positive outlook and his characteristic sense of humor, never losing his spirit. He faced his health issues without complaint, accepting them as part of God’s plan and trusting in God’s support and ultimate victory.

His final written words, found in a notebook by his chair, reflect his peace and perspective on life and death: “Weep not for me, that I am no longer with you; Weep for yourself that you must stay a while longer.” These words encapsulate his faith, his acceptance, and his enduring spirit as he looked towards his eternal home.
