The Digimon Pet Battle Dilemma: Can V-Pets Actually Win?

Like many Digimon enthusiasts, I’ve been pitting my original V-Pets against Pendulum devices for battles, but I’ve consistently noticed a perplexing trend: my V-Pets seem to lose every single time. It doesn’t seem to matter what factors are at play; the outcome is always the same.

Recently, I decided to conduct a small-scale experiment, bringing together two original V-Pets and two Pendulum devices. I regularly battled my Version 2 V-Pet, featuring a well-trained Garurumon, against both my Pendulum 2.0 and Pendulum 4.0. Each time, Garurumon faced defeat. This wasn’t a new experience; even before Garurumon, my Angemon on the same V-Pet had suffered similar losses. I initially attributed this to a potential difference in training effectiveness, perhaps the Pendulum’s shaking mechanism provided a superior training regimen compared to the original V-Pet methods, drawing a parallel to the training dynamics observed in the Digimon Unlimited app.

However, the situation became more intriguing when I reset my Pendulums. Garurumon was still around, having undergone extensive daily training on my Version 2 V-Pet for a considerable period. This V-Pet had essentially become a dedicated training tool for my other devices, consistently battling and mostly winning against my Version 1 V-Pet, all while receiving perfect care – no care mistakes or missed calls.

Driven by curiosity and a desire to finally witness a V-Pet victory against a Pendulum, I initiated a battle last night. My well-trained Garurumon from the Version 2 V-Pet faced a fresh Biyomon on my Pendulum 4.0. To my astonishment, Biyomon won. What was even more surprising was that I hadn’t trained the Biyomon at all since it hatched; it was completely untouched. Meanwhile, as mentioned, Garurumon had been meticulously trained and cared for since its Digimon birth. This unexpected loss made me seriously question whether it was even possible for an original V-Pet to ever defeat a Pendulum.

Fast forward to earlier today. The untrained Biyomon had evolved into Birdramon. Deciding to test the waters again, I initiated another battle between Birdramon and my seasoned Garurumon. Birdramon won once more, and this time, I hadn’t even shaken the Pendulum. The battle had a devastating consequence for my V-Pet – Garurumon died at the age of 11, a direct result of the battle. To be honest, I was quite disappointed as I had grown fond of that particular Digimon Pet.

This series of events leads me to ask: does anyone truly understand the underlying mechanics of these battles? Is it programmed in a way that an original Digimon V-Pet is inherently disadvantaged against Pendulums, only capable of defeating other original V-Pets? Has anyone out there experienced a V-Pet actually winning against a Pendulum or any other type of Digimon virtual pet device?

In short: An untrained Pendulum 4.0 Biyomon utterly defeated my well-trained and diligently cared for Original V2 Garurumon. What’s going on here?
