The community is mourning the passing of Tiki, a scarlet macaw who served as the cherished mascot of Denny’s Pet World for many years. Tiki, a vibrant and interactive bird, became an integral part of the pet store shortly after its establishment in 1974 and remained a beloved figure until her passing on February 4th at the age of 45.
John Fleshman, the owner of Denny’s Pet World, shared that while Tiki’s declining health was known to the staff, her absence is deeply felt. “She was getting older and getting sick and losing weight,” Fleshman explained. “But it’s still hard even though we knew it was coming. She’s been with us for so long—been a part of the family.” Tiki was more than just a pet; she was family to the Denny’s Pet World team and a fixture of the store.
Unlike typical pet store animals, Tiki enjoyed a cage-free life within Denny’s Pet World. Her open perch became a popular spot where customers could interact with her, creating memorable moments and photo opportunities. Tiki was known for her engaging personality and delighted visitors with her limited but charming vocabulary, often greeting them with phrases like “Hi,” “Hello,” “Pretty bird,” and “Mamma.” Her presence made every visit to Denny’s Pet World a unique experience.
Tiki’s impact extended beyond the walls of Denny’s Pet World. Owner John Fleshman regularly brought Tiki to convalescent homes, sharing her joyful presence with patients. Even her naturally shed feathers were collected and given to children who eagerly used them for kite making, further connecting Tiki to the community’s heart. “Everyone loved her,” Fleshman fondly recalled, emphasizing the broad affection for Tiki.
The announcement of Tiki’s passing on the Denny’s Pet World Facebook page triggered an outpouring of community grief and fond memories. Fleshman was touched by the extensive response, stating, “I was blown away…I had no idea how attached the customers were to her.” The Facebook post quickly garnered hundreds of comments, filled with condolences, shared photos, and personal anecdotes of Tiki’s impact on their lives. Many commenters recounted growing up visiting Tiki at Denny’s Pet World, highlighting her enduring presence across generations.
Laura Hook, the manager at Denny’s Pet World for 25 years, described the store’s atmosphere after Tiki’s passing as noticeably quiet. “It’s so quiet around here without her,” she noted, remembering Tiki as a “lovey, snuggly bird” with a playful “sense of humor.” Hook shared stories of customers coming into Denny’s Pet World specifically to express their sympathy, reinforcing Tiki’s role as “a real bird of the community” who touched countless lives.
In remembrance of Tiki, flowers and a memorial plaque now adorn her perch at Denny’s Pet World. The plaque poignantly reads: “It is with great sadness that we announce that Tiki passed away Feb. 4. She was with Denny’s Pet World for over 43 years and will be greatly missed.” Julia Marshall, Fleshman’s fiancée, mentioned that Tiki’s remains are being cremated, and plans for a formal memorial service are underway, allowing the community to further celebrate and remember the remarkable life of Denny’s Pet World‘s beloved mascot, Tiki.
