DeKalb County proudly unveiled its brand-new pet shelter on Wednesday, July 26th, marking a significant step forward in animal care within the community. This state-of-the-art Dekalb County Pet Shelter, a sprawling 33,440-square-foot facility situated on 5.3 acres in Chamblee, is designed to house over 400 animals comfortably and provide them with the best possible care while they await their forever homes.
This impressive $12 million investment nearly doubles the capacity of the previous shelter located on Camp Road, demonstrating DeKalb County’s commitment to animal welfare. A key feature of the new DeKalb County pet shelter is its expansive 1,300-square-foot clinic. This modern clinic is equipped with a surgery prep area, a dedicated surgery room, a laboratory space, secure pharmacy storage, and holding areas specifically designed for animals preparing for or recovering from surgery. This on-site clinic will be instrumental in providing essential spay-and-neuter services for all animals adopted from the shelter, ensuring responsible pet ownership from the outset. The DeKalb County pet shelter is now open and ready to serve the community at 3280 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Chamblee, GA 30341.
DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond expressed his deep gratitude, stating, “The county is extremely grateful to the countless volunteers who advocated for a new shelter in DeKalb County.” He especially acknowledged the dedication of the Animal Services Advisory Board volunteers, whose years of guidance were crucial in ensuring DeKalb County now boasts “a quality facility that provides optimal animal care and shelter.” The Animal Services Advisory Board, formed in 2011, has played a vital role in planning the new DeKalb County pet shelter and continues to advise county officials on animal services and enforcement matters.
Susan Neugent, chair of the DeKalb County animal services task force and a member of the Animal Services Advisory Board, emphasized the shelter’s purpose: “The new facility is a temporary sanctuary that will provide shelter to animals in need.” She further articulated the compassionate mission of the DeKalb County pet shelter, saying it will offer “love, care, and a home to county animals that are lost, abandoned, or homeless.”
Lifeline Animal Project is entrusted with the management of this vital DeKalb County pet shelter. To celebrate the opening and encourage adoptions, Lifeline Animal Project offered waived adoption fees throughout July. This initiative meant that all dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies, regardless of size, age, or breed, could be adopted without any adoption fees. Furthermore, every adoption included essential services such as free spay-neuter, vaccinations, and microchipping, making it even easier for families to welcome a new pet into their lives.
