Are Pets Allowed in Airbnb? A Host’s Insight into Pet-Friendly Policies

Traveling can be complicated, and when you factor in a pet with specific needs, it adds another layer of complexity. We understand this firsthand, as we often travel with our medium-sized rescue dog who requires daily medication for his mobility issues. Finding pet-friendly accommodations that truly understand these needs was a challenge that ultimately shaped our approach to hosting on Airbnb. This personal experience led us to open our cottage to furry companions, and it’s been a surprisingly positive journey.

Why We Opened Our Airbnb to Pets

Our decision to welcome pets stemmed from our own experiences as pet owners seeking pet-friendly travel options. Knowing how much it meant to find hosts who understood our dog’s requirements, we wanted to “pay it forward” and offer that same welcoming environment to others. Our property, a detached cottage with a spacious lot, is ideally suited for guests with animals. It provides ample space for pets to roam and relax without disturbing anyone. As a result, roughly half of our bookings now include pets, mostly dogs and cats, and it’s been a rewarding experience overall.

The Reality of Hosting Pets: Addressing Concerns and Damages

While the vast majority of guests with pets have been wonderful, there have been a few learning curves. We did encounter one instance of significant damage when a dog, left alone for an extended period, attempted to chew through a door. It’s important for hosts to know that Airbnb’s Host Guarantee doesn’t typically cover pet damage. This experience prompted us to implement a damage deposit, although we still avoid charging a separate pet fee upfront. We also now proactively communicate with guests about leaving pets unattended for long durations. A new environment can be stressful for animals, and extended periods alone can lead to anxiety and potentially destructive behavior, even in pets who are well-behaved at home.

Pets vs. Kids: Challenging the Mess Myth

One common concern about allowing pets is potential mess and damage. However, in our experience, pets are often significantly less messy than families with young children. We allow both and can confidently say that the pet owners are generally incredibly responsible. After hosting numerous guests with pets, we’ve found that most are exceptionally tidy. In fact, after one booking with two dogs, our cleaner was unavailable, and we cleaned the cottage ourselves. We were amazed – you genuinely couldn’t tell pets had even been there. To be prepared for pet hair, we invested in a high-quality, heavy-duty vacuum cleaner, and the cottage features hard surface floors throughout, which makes cleaning up after pets a breeze.

Is a Pet-Friendly Airbnb Right for You? Considerations for Hosts

Deciding whether to allow pets in your Airbnb is a personal choice. There are certainly considerations, such as potential for damage and the need for more thorough cleaning. However, the benefits can be substantial. Opening your doors to pets expands your potential guest pool and taps into a large market of travelers who prioritize pet-friendly accommodations. For us, it aligns with our values of empathy and inclusivity. While it requires a bit more awareness and preparation, the positive experiences and the ability to provide a welcoming space for pets and their owners make it a worthwhile endeavor. It’s about weighing the potential challenges against the rewards and deciding if it fits your hosting style and property.

Ultimately, allowing pets in our Airbnb has been a positive decision, rooted in our own experiences and a desire to create a welcoming space for all travelers, furry friends included.
