Born in 1942 to Rinze and Margarethe VanderVeen, Peter Van Der Veen was a lifelong New Yorker. His early years were spent in Amityville before his family moved to the Binghamton area. This formative period instilled in him a strong sense of community and belonging, values he carried throughout his life. In 1965, Peter answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. Two years later, in 1967, he married Lynn Rittell of Syracuse, NY, beginning a loving partnership that would last for 57 years.

Education and Career: Championing the Community
Peter van der veen was a firm believer in the power of education, earning both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in History from SUNY Cortland and SUNY Oswego respectively. This academic foundation equipped him for a fulfilling career with the Social Security Administration. For many years, Peter served as a dedicated employee and Union Representative, tirelessly advocating for his colleagues and the wider community. His commitment to helping others extended beyond his professional role. Peter was the host of a long-running Question and Answer segment on WRVO Public Media, where he shared his expertise on Social Security issues, providing invaluable guidance to countless listeners. Further demonstrating his dedication to service, Peter van der veen was a valuable resource for Unity Acres, a nonprofit House of Hospitality for men in Orwell, NY, offering support and guidance to those in need.

Personal Life and Enduring Legacy
Beyond his professional and community endeavors, Peter van der veen was a man of rich personal interests. An avid reader, he amassed an extensive personal library filled with science fiction and history books. He also found joy in woodworking and spending time outdoors, particularly at the family campsite, a cherished retreat for many years. Peter’s memory will be treasured by his beloved wife of 57 years, Lynn; his daughters, Kristen (Anthony) Midey and Laurie (Michael Sullivan) VanderVeen; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Midey and Jonathan Midey; his siblings, John (Barbara) VanderVeen and Judy VanderVeen; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
In remembrance of Peter van der veen, friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation at Watson Funeral Home in Central Square, NY, on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held at Divine Mercy Church in Central Square on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 9:00 AM.
