As a devoted pet owner, finding the right food for my Rottweiler has always been a top priority. For years, I turned to Canine Caviar, believing in their promise of quality nutrition. However, my recent experiences have led me to share a serious warning about this brand.
Over the past year and a half, I’ve noticed a disturbing change in Canine Caviar Pet Foods. Each bag I purchased emitted an unusual, almost perfumed, tainted smell. This wasn’t just a slight odor; it was pungent and concerning, permeating the food itself. It didn’t smell like any natural protein source I recognized – duck, venison, chicken, or fish – all proteins listed in their ingredients. Because I also cook for my dog, supplementing with dry kibble, I was acutely aware of this deviation in smell. Even more alarmingly, my Rottweiler, who had been eating Canine Caviar, began exhibiting worrying health issues. He developed a dry, pungent-smelling coat, his stools became similarly pungent, his eyes were goopy, and he developed a hot spot that has persisted for nine long months despite normal thyroid levels.
Initially, I assumed I had received a bad batch and started returning bags to the feed store due to the tainted smell. However, after repeated returns, the store informed me they could no longer accept them, as they weren’t being reimbursed for these returns. This prompted me to contact Canine Caviar directly about the ongoing problem of the tainted, perfume-like smell. To my dismay, the company responded by sending me a new bag of their food – which smelled even worse than the bags I had been returning! Adding to my frustration and suspicion, Canine Caviar became unresponsive. They stopped returning my phone calls, and I discovered they don’t even provide an email address for customer inquiries. This lack of communication is deeply concerning and unprofessional. I also learned that while Canine Caviar is processed in Georgia, they frequently change processing plants, raising questions about consistency and quality control.
Based on my negative experiences, I urge fellow pet owners to exercise extreme caution and PLEASE DON’T BUY CANINE CAVIAR PET FOODS without careful inspection. If you do choose to purchase it, rigorously smell and even taste (yes, taste!) the food before feeding it to your beloved pet. If it smells tainted, return it immediately. Pet food should have a pleasant, natural smell, not a tainted, chemical odor. My biggest fear is that other pets might suffer serious health consequences, such as kidney or liver failure, from consuming what I believe to be tainted pet food. It’s a sad reality that some pet food companies prioritize profit over the quality and safety of their products.
Driven by my concern for my dog’s health and after extensive research, I made the switch to Halo dog food, a brand owned by Ellen DeGeneres. In my opinion, Halo represents the highest quality pet food available on the market. I believe Ms. DeGeneres is a person of integrity who genuinely cares about using high-quality ingredients in Halo pet food. She has the resources to source the best ingredients, setting Halo apart from competitors who may cut corners. I truly regret not switching to Halo sooner. Halo products consistently offer the correct protein and fat ratios and use real meat – not just meal or rendered ingredients – but actual, recognizable food components, and importantly, no ingredients sourced from China. The kibble size is also thoughtfully designed, with smaller sizes available for large breeds, which can help prevent bloat. And unlike Canine Caviar, Halo dog food smells wonderfully fresh and natural! During the gradual transition to Halo, my dog experienced no digestive issues. He loves the taste, and I have peace of mind knowing I’m feeding him a truly superior product. For pet owners seeking the ultimate in pet food quality with real, wholesome ingredients, Halo is the clear choice. They even offer a vegan option, which is excellent for dogs with conditions like pancreatitis.
