Darwin L. Bruns: A Life Remembered in St. Peter

Darwin L. Bruns, aged 79, a long-time resident of St. Peter, Minnesota, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato. His passing, surrounded by his loving family, marks the end of a life rich in dedication, family, and passion for simple joys. The community in St. Peter and beyond mourns the loss of a beloved man who touched many lives.

Born on May 28, 1944, in New Ulm to Fred and Verneeda (Bendix) Bruns, Darwin’s early years were rooted in the values of hard work and community. He began his education at Immanuel Lutheran School in Courtland and later graduated from Nicollet High School, setting the stage for a life of commitment and diligence. Darwin’s journey took a beautiful turn when he married Carla Rosenberg on May 15, 1965, in Grey Eagle, MN, beginning a partnership that would last a lifetime.

Darwin was known for his unwavering dedication to any task he undertook. This was evident in his long career at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where he worked until his well-deserved retirement in 2007. His commitment to his work was a reflection of his broader approach to life – thorough and filled with pride.

Beyond his professional life, Darwin embraced a wide array of interests. He was a skilled woodworker, creating pieces that surely reflected his attention to detail. Music filled his life, with a special fondness for old-time melodies. An adventurous spirit led him to camp and travel extensively, achieving the remarkable feat of visiting all 50 states, as well as parts of Canada, Mexico, and Europe. For over four decades, deer hunting was a cherished tradition, and he impressively taught himself to play the button accordion, showcasing his self-reliance and love for learning. However, amidst all these pursuits, Darwin’s greatest happiness was found in the company of his family. He especially treasured moments spent with his grandchildren, enthusiastically supporting them at their school events, demonstrating his profound love and commitment to family.

Darwin is survived by his devoted wife, Carla, and their daughters, Michelle Meyer and Sheri Bruns. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Anthony (Brian) and Travis (Tori) Meyer. He is also remembered by his sisters-in-law, Mary Bruns, Roxann Rosenberg, and Ruth Rosenberg; brother-in-law, James Stein, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.

He was predeceased by his parents; his son-in-law, Patrick Meyer; his sisters, Arlene Stein and Dolores Syverson; brothers, Dennis and Virgil Bruns; an infant brother; his father-in-law and mother-in-law; sister-in-law, Oradell Bruns; and brothers-in-law, Delmont Syverson and Steven Rosenberg. Each of these family members held a special place in Darwin’s heart, and he in theirs.

Darwin’s absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His laughter, love, and the lasting impact he made on those around him will forever remain in our hearts. His memory is truly a blessing.

A memorial service to celebrate Darwin’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Peter, a place of solace and community in St. Peter. Pastor David Christenson will officiate the service, guiding those in attendance in remembrance and reflection. Following the service, burial will take place at Greenhill Cemetery in St. Peter, where Darwin will be laid to rest in the town he loved. Prior to the service, visitation will be held from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the church, providing an opportunity for friends and family to gather and support one another.
