Peter Doig: A Major Exhibition of New Works at The Courtauld Gallery

Dive into the captivating world of contemporary art with The Morgan Stanley Exhibition: Peter Doig, a landmark showcase at The Courtauld Gallery in London. This significant exhibition, which opened on February 10th and runs until May 29th, 2023, marks a thrilling new chapter in the career of Peter Doig, one of today’s most acclaimed and influential painters. It is a notable milestone as the first contemporary art exhibition hosted by The Courtauld since its reopening in November 2021, following extensive redevelopment.

Since his relocation from Trinidad to London in 2021, Peter Doig has been immersed in a dynamic period of artistic creation. The exhibition offers a unique glimpse into this transition, presenting paintings developed in Trinidad, New York, and other locations, alongside entirely new pieces inspired by London itself. These works powerfully convey Doig’s exploration of diverse landscapes, figures, memories, and painting techniques, reflecting a rich tapestry of experiences.

Peter Doig’s long-standing admiration for The Courtauld Gallery’s esteemed collection, particularly its Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masters, is a central theme of this exhibition. Artists like Cézanne, Gauguin, Manet, Monet, Pissarro, and Van Gogh, cornerstones of The Courtauld, have profoundly influenced Doig’s painting and printmaking throughout his artistic journey. Visitors are invited to draw connections between Doig’s contemporary masterpieces and the works of these earlier masters, gaining a deeper appreciation for the dialogue across art history.

Further enriching the exhibition experience, The Gilbert and Ildiko Butler Drawings Gallery presents Peter Doig: Etchings for Derek Walcott. This special display unveils, for the first time, a series of prints created by Doig as a response to the evocative poetry of his friend and collaborator, the late Nobel laureate Derek Walcott (1930-2017). Entry to this print exhibition is included with the Gallery Entry + Peter Doig exhibition ticket, offering a comprehensive exploration of Doig’s artistic range.

The Morgan Stanley Exhibition: Peter Doig is generously sponsored by Morgan Stanley, with further support from Kenneth C. Griffin and the Huo Family Foundation, and additional contributions from the Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne. This exhibition provides an unparalleled opportunity to witness the evolution of Peter Doig’s artistry and engage with his compelling vision within the context of art historical giants.
