Remembering Pete Frates: The Inspiring Legacy of an ALS Warrior

Today, we remember Peter Frates, a remarkable man who inspired millions around the globe. Heaven welcomed Pete on this day, a beloved husband to Julie, a devoted father to Lucy, and a cherished son to John and Nancy. Pete passed away peacefully at the age of 34, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous and lengthy battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Pete was more than just a man; he was a beacon of hope and an embodiment of resilience. His strength and unwavering positivity touched countless lives, making him an inspiration to people from all walks of life.

As a natural leader and the ultimate team player, Pete served as a role model, especially for young athletes. They admired his bravery and his ability to maintain a positive spirit even when facing immense adversity. He was a true fighter who encouraged everyone to utilize their talents to make a difference in the lives of others.

Despite the immense challenges of ALS, Pete never succumbed to complaint. Instead, he transformed his personal struggle into an opportunity to offer hope to fellow patients and their families. He dedicated his life to altering the course of a disease that, at the time of his diagnosis, lacked effective treatments or a cure. Through sheer determination and the unwavering support of Team Frate Train, Pete became the driving force behind the global phenomenon known as the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. This groundbreaking movement, launched in August 2014, revolutionized social media fundraising, generating donations worldwide. These funds significantly improved access to ALS care, facilitated crucial genetic discoveries, and propelled the development of new treatments, bringing the world closer to a potential cure. Pete became a symbol of hope for the entire ALS community and beyond.

Speaking on behalf of Julie, Lucy, John, Nancy, Jennifer, Andrew, and his extended family and numerous friends, we ask that you join us in celebrating Pete’s life and the enduring hope he instilled in so many. Let us all strive to live by his daily affirmation: “Be passionate, be genuine, be hardworking, and don’t ever be afraid to be great.”
