Garfield Heights, Ohio— A beloved local institution in Garfield Heights has unfortunately shut its doors permanently. Peter’s Meat Market and Deli, affectionately known to many as Peter’s Butcher, located on Turney Road, has ceased operations after serving the community for an impressive 89 years.
For countless residents like Bob Wornoff, Peter’s Meat Market and Deli was more than just a store; it was a culinary landmark. Wornoff, a loyal customer for over three decades, emphasized the deep void its closure would leave. “They will be missed,” he stated, echoing the sentiments of many in the neighborhood. Peter’s Butcher was particularly renowned for its high-quality kielbasa and a wide array of Polish specialties, making it a go-to destination for those seeking authentic flavors.
Wornoff recounted his tradition of stocking up on their smoked sausages, or “smokies,” before any trip out of town, a testament to the quality and appeal of Peter’s Butcher‘s offerings. Matthew Ruta, another saddened local customer, highlighted the convenience and affordability of the market, noting its proximity and consistently good prices alongside excellent products. “It was close to home,” Ruta mentioned, emphasizing the butcher shop’s integral role in the daily lives of nearby residents.
Attempts to reach the owners were unsuccessful when customers, along with a News 5 team, visited the closed shop. The reasons behind the closure remain unclear at this time, adding to the community’s sense of loss. Wornoff shared a phone call with his son in New York City, who upon hearing the news, immediately requested his father to procure some of the famous “smokies,” a request that sadly could not be fulfilled due to the permanent closure.
Despite the disappointment, the Garfield Heights community expresses gratitude for the 89 years of service provided by Peter’s Butcher. While the closure marks a bittersweet moment, residents acknowledge the long and impactful legacy of this local Peter’s Butcher shop. “I wish it didn’t have to happen,” Wornoff concluded, encapsulating the community’s overall sentiment of loss and appreciation for a Garfield Heights staple.
