Jonny Piza, a beloved son, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 20th, 2023, in St. Petersburg, FL, at the age of 37. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his memory will forever be cherished.
Born into the loving Piza family, Jonny was surrounded by warmth and affection throughout his life. He is survived by his parents, Frederick and Janet Piza (Cripps), who instilled in him strong values and unwavering support. His sister, Julie Rego Hoffman, and her husband Michael, along with his nephew Christopher Rego and niece Isabella Rego, will fondly remember Jonny’s playful spirit and caring nature. Aunt Cynthia Garry and cousins Samantha and Joseph Garry also mourn his loss, recalling cherished family moments.
Jonny’s life was enriched by his dear girlfriend, Hanna Hughes, and his loyal canine companion, Blake, affectionately known as “the potato.” Blake, a testament to Jonny’s love for animals, was more than just a pet; he was a true friend and confidant.
Preceding Jonny in passing were his maternal grandparents, Howard and Doris Cripps, and his paternal grandparents, John and Barbara Piza, as well as his aunt Marianne Piza. Though they are no longer with him, their influence and love shaped the man Jonny became.
Jonny’s educational journey began at Tolman High School, from which he graduated in 2004. Driven by a desire to help others, he pursued and obtained his EMT license from CCRI. This achievement marked the beginning of his career in emergency medical services, where he served with Med-Tech Ambulance. Furthering his commitment to saving lives, Jonny completed his Paramedic course in 2008, demonstrating his dedication to professional growth and service.
Transitioning his skills into a different field, Jonny joined Pardini Construction, and later AGI Construction after obtaining his CDL license. At AGI Construction, Jonny’s exceptional talent as a Driver/Machine Operator was recognized when he was named “Best Driver/Operator.” He found deep satisfaction in his work at AGI, forging lasting bonds of friendship with colleagues who became like family. His expertise and dedication were further acknowledged through his membership in Local 4 IUOE. Jonny’s career path eventually led him to St. Pete, where he continued to excel operating multiple heavy machines, showcasing his adaptability and skill across various environments.
Beyond his professional life, Jonny embraced life to the fullest during his four years at Camp Yawgoog in high school. These were formative years where he thrived, creating cherished memories and establishing lifelong friendships. His commitment to personal growth and achievement was further exemplified when he earned his Eagle Scout rank in 2003, a testament to his perseverance and leadership. Jonny’s love for the outdoors extended to his leisure time, where he found joy in fishing, golfing, and simply being immersed in nature. A passionate sports enthusiast, Jonny was a devoted fan of the Boston Bruins, cheering them on with unwavering loyalty.
Jonny Piza’s warm smile, generous spirit, and zest for life will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and love for those around him.
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Jonny’s life at a Funeral Service on Thursday, May 11th, at 11:00 AM at the Costigan-O’Neill Funeral Home, located at 220 Cottage St., Pawtucket. Following the service, burial will take place at Notre Dame Cemetery in Pawtucket.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, May 10th, from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Costigan-O’Neill Funeral Home, providing an opportunity for those who wish to pay their respects to the Piza family and share their memories of Jonny.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to the Jonathan Piza Memorial Campership Fund, Care of Friends of Troop 28, 200 Cameron St. Pawtucket, RI 02861. This fund has been established to honor Jonny’s memory by supporting young people in experiencing the transformative power of summer camp, an experience that was so meaningful in Jonny’s own life.
