Peter G. Woodward: A Life of Service and Dedication in York, Maine

Peter G. Woodward, a beloved husband, father, and community member, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2023, at the age of 81, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on October 20, 1941, in Hartford, CT, to Oscar and Josephine (Perkins) Woodward, Peter Woodward’s life was marked by service to his country, devotion to his family, and active participation in his community in York, Maine.

Raised in Walpole, NH, alongside his three siblings, Peter Woodward graduated from Walpole High School in 1959. His pursuit of higher education led him to George Washington University in Washington, DC, where he earned his degree in 1967 and, significantly, met his future wife, Marlene. Their meeting marked the beginning of a 57-year partnership filled with adventure and mutual devotion.

Peter Woodward’s commitment to service was evident in his 14 years with the U.S. Army. His military career took him to Kentucky and Germany before he found his home in York, Maine, in 1980. Stationed in Portland, Maine, as a U.S. Army Nurse Recruiter, Peter Woodward played a crucial role in connecting individuals with opportunities in military nursing. His dedication to the armed forces continued long after his active duty, as he remained a staunch supporter of the local VFW and American Legion, embodying patriotism throughout his life.

Professionally, Peter Woodward excelled in international sales, demonstrating his interpersonal skills and business acumen. Later in his career, he transitioned to the heating and plumbing industry, before enjoying a part-time role in retirement at Estes Oil in York. His diverse career path showcased his adaptability and strong work ethic.

Beyond his professional and military life, Peter Woodward was deeply involved in his community and church. A dedicated member of St. Christopher’s Church, he contributed to the music ministry for many years and was a respected 4th degree Knight in Assembly 2526 of the Knights of Columbus. His faith and community involvement were integral aspects of his life, reflecting his generous spirit and desire to contribute to the well-being of others.

Known affectionately as “Pops” and “Pedro” to his loved ones, Peter Woodward cherished his role as a family entertainer, particularly at their summer camp. An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in fishing, hunting, and golfing. He was also renowned as a “grill master,” delighting family and friends with his culinary skills. However, above all his passions, Peter Woodward was most proud of his roles as a devoted husband to Marlene and a loving father. He treasured moments spent with his grandchildren, creating laughter and lasting memories with his comical sayings and warm presence. Peter and Marlene’s shared love for travel took them on memorable journeys across Europe and the United States, enriching their lives and strengthening their bond.

Peter G. Woodward is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene Woodward, his son Steve Woodward and his wife Christine, his daughter Stacy Olson and her husband Steve, and his cherished grandchildren: Holly Olson, Andrew Woodward, Hollis Woodward, Matthew Carrigan, Sean Carrigan, and Michael Woodward. He is also survived by his twin sister, Linda Woodward Geiger, his sister Gale Woodward, sister-in-law Debbie Towers, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his younger brother, Richard Woodward.

A funeral Mass to celebrate the life of Peter Woodward will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at 11:00 am at St. Christopher’s Church in York, ME. Following the service, a short burial service and luncheon will be held at the church.
